Industrial Entrepreneur Confidence Index (ICEI) Falls in Most Sectors

The Industrial Entrepreneur Confidence Index (ICEI) Sectoral dropped in 20 out of 29 industry sectors in August, according to a survey released by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) on Wednesday (27). As a result, the number of segments experiencing a lack of confidence increased from 23 to 25. Consequently, only four industrial sectors surveyed remain confident.

The ICEI ranges from 0 to 100 points. Scores below the dividing line of 50 points indicate a lack of confidence among entrepreneurs, while scores above 50 suggest confidence.

In three sectors, the decline was significant enough to shift them from a state of confidence to a lack of confidence. These sectors are maintenance and repair; printing and reproduction; and footwear and its parts.

Nine sectors showed an increase in the confidence indicator, but only one — the beverages sector — saw growth sufficient to place it in a state of confidence.

According to Isabella Bianchi, Policy and Industry Analyst at CNI, the rise in pessimism in some sectors during August is linked to the increase in U.S. tariffs on certain Brazilian exports.

“Uncertainties in the external scenario, especially due to the application of import tariffs by the U.S. government, have impacted the confidence of industrial sectors more directly affected by taxation,” she explains.

Northeast is the Only Region Showing Confidence

Although it fell by 0.7 points, from 51.5 to 50.8 points, the Northeast region remains the only one to demonstrate confidence.

Entrepreneurs in the North, previously neutral, turned pessimistic after the indicator dropped from 50 to 47.9 points. In the Center-West, the index rose slightly by 0.2 points to 47.7 points, indicating that industrialists in this region still lack confidence.

In the South and Southeast, the ICEI dropped by 3.5 and 2.1 points respectively, intensifying the lack of confidence among entrepreneurs in these regions during the transition to August.
